Left Brain vs. Right Brain: What Is This Theory All About, Anyway?

It goes without saying that the human brain is an intricate organ that contains about 100 billion neurons and just as many connections. Weighing approximately three pounds, your brain serves as your central command center for all that you think, feel, and do – and no, we’re not over-exaggerating!

Your brain is divided into two halves, or hemispheres, which control certain functions. Though the two sides of your brain look very much alike, they are, in fact, extremely different in how they process information. Despite their contrasts, however, the two halves of the human brain do not work independently of one another.

There is a theory, though, that came to popularity in the 1960s with the research of psychobiologist and Nobel Prize-winner, Roger W. Sperry. According to Sperry, people are either left or right-brained dominant. Although this research is now dated, it’s interesting to look at the various factors Sperry connected to each brain’s hemisphere. Check out the breakdown below:

The Left Brain Is Connected To…
• Logic
• Sequencing
• Linear Thinking
• Mathematics
• Thinking in Words

The Right Brain Is Connected To…
• Imagination
• The Arts
• Intuition & Non-Verbal Cues
• Daydreaming
• Thinking Visually

Wherever your brain dominance lies, you can keep yourself sharp in the following ways:
• Spend time each day reading, writing, or both.
• Never stop learning – enroll in a class, lecture, or workshop.
• Tackle challenging sudoku, crossword, or logic puzzles.
• Play memory games, board games, card games, and video games.
• Take on a new hobby that requires you to focus.
